The use of concrete pavers is widespread in the construction of garages due, among other reasons, to their high resistance to vehicle traffic. It is true that there are cheaper solutions, such as asphalt or gravel, but these materials have shortcomings that we will not find in the case of concrete pavers. At Cleannox, we want to discuss the advantages of installing concrete pavers for garage access.
Advantages of using concrete pavers in garage access
The first aspect that we must highlight in relation to the advantages of this system is the easy arrangement of the pavers, which can be done with affordable and simple tools. Therefore, we do not need to use heavy machinery to pave this type of flooring.
On the other hand, we do not require excessive technical knowledge or a large number of operators to carry out the paving work of a garage with this technique. Three professionals are usually sufficient to achieve the objectives in a reasonable time and with total guarantee.
However, the two main virtues that make concrete paving an ideal solution for a garage or even a mechanical workshop are its long life and its enormous resistance to traffic. In fact, this type of flooring can last between 40 and 50 years.
Resistance to weather agents
We must not forget that it is a perfect material to combat the various weather agents (rain, snow, hail, etc.). In addition, it is very resistant to heat, a characteristic that we must take into account in urban areas that experience high temperatures at certain times of the year.
In turn, the paving facilitates the rapid evacuation of water, a very important circumstance to avoid the large puddles that usually produce storms or torrential rains. Finally, its excellent filtration capacity makes it very resistant to frost.
Amount of vehicle traffic
When paving the floor of a garage through the use of concrete pavers, it is essential that we assess the number of vehicles that will circulate throughout the day. Depending on this traffic (and also on the quality of the subgrade), the base must have a certain thickness.
In this sense, if it is a traffic of between one and five vehicles per day, the base of the cement floor will have a thickness that will vary between 8 and 20 centimeters. If the traffic fluctuates between 6 and 20 vehicles per day, it is preferable that its thickness be increased, in some cases, up to 25 centimeters.
As is evident, if the number of cars that are going to circulate grows, it is necessary that we increase the dimensions of the pieces. The pavers will reach 30 centimeters (for a vehicle traffic that ranges between 21 and 50) and, finally, will reach up to 35 centimeters when the number of cars is between 51 and 200.
Another fundamental aspect that we must take into account in this process is the one related to the correct placement of the pavers. In this case, the regulations require a separation between 1.5 and 3 millimeters, space in which we must introduce the appropriate filling material, since this will facilitate the load to propagate through all the pieces without displacements occurring between the pavers.
The pollution of vehicles
Not only do car gases pollute the air we breathe, but also the wear of tires, brakes or pavement. In reality, barely 7% of the pollution of particles smaller in size than 2.5 microns come from the exhaust pipe. This results in diseases of all kinds, especially respiratory, but also cardiovascular, stroke, decreased neuronal development in children or neurodegenerative diseases in older adults.
In this sense, the presence of an ecological pavement contributes to reducing toxic emissions from the environment, in addition to other effects such as the reduction of the heat island effect. Its use is especially indicated in all types of pavements including roads with little traffic. In parking lots or garage accesses they are a floor of quality, resistance and also contribute to the environment.
At Cleannox we manufacture (since January 2023) all our production is made with concrete pavers with photocatalytic effect. We are part of the Iberian Association of Photocatalysis with the aim of joining efforts for the introduction of constructive applications in urban infrastructures.
The importance of a good pavement design
Finally, we cannot forget the aesthetic aspect when designing the floor of a garage of a house. Concrete pavers will allow us a wide range of possibilities, both in the colors that can be chosen and in the formats.
In conclusion, concrete paving becomes the ideal alternative if we want to achieve an aesthetic, functional and durable garage floor.
